When you think of Hawaii you imagine white beaches, the stunning colors of the ocean, the richness of the tropical forest, and endless possibilities to relax and have a great time. Thanks to the abundance of fresh fruits, juices, and syrups, the art of making cocktails, alias mixology, has found fertile ground here. And because cocktails aren’t just drinks but moods, let’s switch to the “Island Time” and enjoy some of the most popular tropical cocktails.

Blue Hawaii and Blue Hawaiian

These two cocktails have similar names and similar ingredients but they aren’t the same thing. Blue Hawaiiwas invented in 1957, right here in Hawaii. It’s a mix of rum, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, and a sweet and sour mix. Blue Hawaiian on the other hand has rum or vodka, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and lemon juice. It’s sometimes called the Swimming Pool and nobody knows who and when invented it. Some say Blue Hawaiian in a version of Blue Hawaii. Others say it’s a version of Piña colada. This brings us to the next cocktail to enjoy at sunset on a beautiful beach in Hawaii.

Piña colada

The official drink of Puerto Rico, Piña colada is the ultimate icon of having fun under the sun, relaxation, and holiday mood. It’s made of rum, cream of coconut, and pineapple juice. Its history starts in the XIXth century and includes pirates, newspapers, hotels, and controversies. The truth is regardless of who invented Piña colada we’re very happy they did.

Mai Tai

Mai Tai also has a fuzzy history and a wonderful taste. Some say it originates in Hawaii or at least was inspired by the Polynesian cultures. The original recipe included white rum, dark rum, orgeat syrup, candy syrup, orange curaçao, and lime juice. However, you can find plenty of variants that include triple sec, almond syrup, or grenadine. They are equally delicious and spectacular in color.

Chi Chi

Creamy and smooth, Chi Chi is basically a Piña colada with a twist. Instead of rum, Chi Chi has vodka, which gives it a sweeter kick and allows the pineapple flavor to develop more. Its peak of popularity was in the ’70s and ‘80s but the Chi Chi can still get the party going.

Whether you want to have fun or relax on the beach, learn how to surf, or practice yoga at sunrise Hawaii has everything you need. Furthermore, you can find a tropical cocktail that goes with your activity and mood. If you don’t like alcohol, don’t worry. All Hawaiian cocktails have non-alcoholic versions so that you can be able to enjoy the tropical paradise.
